Living with Diabetes can be easier! Here’s how!

by | Sep 2, 2021

Living with diabetes is no easy feat. From the moment you’re diagnosed, life becomes a series of finger pricks, doctors visits, exercising, policing your food, and monitoring of sugar levels. Of course, there’s more to life than your condition but we can’t deny that it’s a lot to take in.

By now, you’ve probably heard the term “glycemic index” one too many times. In fact it might have even lost its meaning and importance. But, this concept, if done right, will alleviate some of the struggles of managing diabetes. So let’s revisit it, shall we?

Just a quick refresher, the glycemic index (GI) is a value (from 1-100) assigned to the food you eat based on how rapidly your body absorbs carbohydrates, turns it into glucose, and releases it in your bloodstream. The higher the GI, the faster your glucose levels will rise. And that’s what we want to avoid at all costs!

You’re probably thinking ‘So how will this make my journey easier? It seems even more complicated now!’ Well, stick around and you’ll find out!

Pay closer attention to foods’ glycemic index

Glycemic Index

So how do you keep your glucose and insulin levels steady? One way to do it is by zeroing in on your foods’ glycemic index, or GI. Here’s a simple chart to help you better understand it!

Low (0-55)
Moderate (56-69)
High (70-100)

You need to eat foods that have low-medium GI to make sure that your glucose and insulin levels don’t spike. So what kind of foods are these? High protein sources from plants, meat and fish, natural yogurt, non-starchy vegetables, and low-sugar fruits are just some of them. Eating a generally low-GI diet has proven to result in better diabetes management and weight loss.

Understand what affects Glycemic Index

We know how GI affects your glucose and insulin levels but what impacts a food’s GI? According to studies, there are several factors that influence it— macronutrient composition, fiber content, ripeness, amount of processes it has undergone, and types of sugars and starches.

Well, that just complicated things, didn’t it? Here’s another factor you need to consider: Sometimes, even if we eat foods that are “textbook healthy”, our insulin and glucose levels still rise, and this unpredictability can be attributed to many things like timing, and the merging of the foods that you eat!
