Diabetes is on the rise in America.  According to the CDC, one in 10 of us is diabetic and 90% have type 2 diabetes.  The majority of prediabetes occurs in adults but is rapidly increasing in children over the past several years.  If diabetes runs in your family, you don’t have to be a part of the statistics.  Know the signs and symptoms of prediabetes.  Stop the progression before it starts.

What Is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is when you have elevated blood sugar levels, but are not yet high enough to have type 2 diabetes.  1 in 3 Americans have prediabetes and most don’t know it.  According to the CDC, the majority of those with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes. (1)  Elevated blood sugar levels put you at risk for other serious health conditions like stroke and heart disease.

The majority of people with prediabetes don’t know they have it.  Making it harder to prevent the full onset of type 2 diabetes.  How can you reverse prediabetes?  First, look out for these symptoms:

  • Above the age 45
  • Being Overweight
  • Immediate Family Member(s) with Type 2 Diabetes
  • Physically Inactive, Less Than 3 Times A Week
  • Had Gestational Diabetes and/or Gave Birth To A Baby Over 9 lbs.
  • Has Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
  • Dark Patches of Skin around Neck, Armpit or Groin, known as Acanthosis Nigricans
  • High Blood Pressure

If you have any of the above, speak with your doctor.  Your practitioner can test your blood sugar levels to see if they are elevated, a sign of prediabetes.  From there you can make lifestyle adjustments to reduce your chance of it developing into type 2 diabetes.  Better yet, with a healthy lifestyle, you may reverse it.
