DishQuo Highlights Diabetes Awareness Month

by | Nov 26, 2021

November is American Diabetes Month—the perfect time to take a closer look at our health. Aside from gestational diabetes (during pregnancy) and type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune disorder), 90 to 95 percent of diabetes cases are type 2.

If you thought that living with diabetes was just about counting carbs and taking medication, you should know, there’s a lot more to the story. That’s why DishQuo’s comprehensive meal plan focuses on the underlying driver of this growing epidemic, insulin.

Understanding Diabetes Complications

Diabetes can feel like an overwhelming diagnosis because it impacts every system in the body. When sugar and insulin levels run high in the bloodstream (as with type 2 diabetes), inflammation circulates to the kidneys, nervous system, eyes, and heart. In addition, lifestyle changes can significantly alter the course of the disease, but underestimating its effects is a dangerous barrier.

Unfortunately, poorly controlled diabetes may go unnoticed, that is until its effects can no longer be ignored. According to the World Health Organization, people with diabetes are two to three times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack. Diabetes is also a primary cause of kidney failure and is responsible for 1 million cases of blindness around the world. With more reliable screening tools available now than ever (including a routine blood test for hemoglobin A1c), much of the heartache and disability caused by diabetes should be prevented. As awareness increases, the future for those with diabetes can only get brighter.

The Hidden Danger of Prediabetes

Prediabetes

Diabetes isn’t just a concern for those with a strong family history or a current diagnosis. Signs of prediabetes are detectable. During prediabetes, the body gradually develops insulin resistance. If addressed early, lifestyle changes to help reverse prediabetes can delay and sometimes prevent diabetes entirely. Sadly, there’s an alarming number of Americans with undiagnosed prediabetes. Experts estimate that 1 out of every three adults has prediabetes (88 million people), but 84 percent are unaware.

Don’t Put Your Health on the Back-Burner

If there’s a lesson to be learned from these surprising diabetes statistics, it’s that we should never take our health for granted. So this holiday season, carve time out with your loved ones to check in on your health. If you have signs of diabetes or prediabetes, the decisions you make today can change your future. With insulin at the base of the problem, learning how to leverage metabolism with nutrition and other lifestyle habits can make a world of difference.
